The article by Loo et al1 in this issue of the ARCHIVES provides very useful snapshots of the academic dermatology workforce from 4 selected academic years within the past 12 years. The study shows that the total number of faculty recruited (n = 255) in those target years exceeds the number leaving (n = 200); however, 97% of the chairs of dermatology departments and divisions thought there were too few academic dermatologists, and 87% were recruiting full-time faculty. One of the important lessons of the study is that retention of faculty may be even more important than recruitment when considering the growth rate of academic faculties.
The fact that this study was funded by the Association of Professors of Dermatology (APD) from the dues of their membership emphasizes the high priority given the academic workforce by the APD. The APD has adopted a strategic plan for the next 5 . . . [Full Text of this Article]
