Stage III Melanoma Treated With Chemotherapy After Surgery During the Second Trimester of Pregnancy

Alexander et al1 found that approximately 31% of 87 reported cases of melanoma in pregnancy had transplacental metastases. We describe herein a patient with stage III melanoma treated with chemotherapy.

Report of a Case

A 29-year-old pregnant Japanese woman noticed the enlargement, elevation, and erosion of a pigmented spot on the anterior aspect of her left thigh. She was referred to our hospital at 17 weeks' gestation. An ulcerated blackish nodule, 20 mm in diameter, had arisen from an asymmetrical, multicolored nevoid lesion, 25 x 30 mm, with irregular borders (Figure 1).
